Uiteraard zijn er nog wat 'aandachtpunten'

Afbeelding

Karak Undaz

A History
Karak Undaz is known to most men of the Empire as one of the places to start trade with the Dwarfs. Human traders have been passing their trade there for centuries, but, as Dwarfs see time, it has been around for a very short time.
For a thorough understanding of Karak Undaz I must begin with the story of Karak Hirn. Karak Hirn is counted as one of the younger Dwarf keeps, established after the Time of Woe. At this time Dwardfs moved west after the fall of many of the ancient strongholds of the World Edge Mountains at the hands of Goblins, Skaven and viler things. This places the foundation of Karak Hirn some two-and-a-half to three thousand years ago, considered by Dwarfs a short time for a hold. Karak Undaz, then not even thought worthy of a name, started out as a small outpost of Karak Hirn. It was a small, reinforced tower that watched over the largest passleading to the Empire. The name of the hold still recalls this humble origin: Watchtower Keep.
Karak Undaz’s history as a true stronghold only really started when, during excavations for defensive extensions, a large deposit of precious ores was discovered. A strong mining industry was quickly set up and it quickly attracted many Dwarfs. Unsettled clans from the east and wandering Dwarfs from the Empire all came to this new land of oppurtunity. The position of the keep along a trail into the Empire also meant it was excellently positioned for trade with the humans. The keep steadily became the gateway for the Imperial traders to the dwarf-made products of the Vaults and the Grey Mountains. Even though the keep was more and more becoming a self-sustaining hold, it was still regarded a part of Karak Hirn. It was not until a mere 300 years ago that king Ranulf of Karak Hirn decided to grant the thane of the largest clan the right of kingship over the newly named Karak Undaz. Thane Torak Okrison was brought before the High King of Karaz-a-Karak and crowned.

The newly established keep and its inhabitants have since grown fiercely proud and tightly knit. In a society where age is considered the defining feature of quality, this youngest of holds suffers from something of a inferiority complex. The young age of their kingdom makes the inhabitants somewhat overzealous in overcoming this self-perceived shortcoming.
The current king, Varek Torakson, is only the second king of Karak Undaz and is almost constantly underway to purge his domain of enemies or reclaim the lands of ancestors. Meanwhile the keep is always under construction for grander hallways and more impressive defences. All of this serves the purpose of letting the world know that Karak Undaz is to be appreciated fully as one of the great Dwarf strongholds

The Armies
The Armies of Karak Undaz range far and wide across the Old World in an attempt to compensate their kingdom’s lack of age.
Dressed in striking blue and white colours, they are easy to recognize on the battlefield. The Warriors carry on their shields the icon of the winged hammer, representing the vengeance of the Dwarfs striking out at their foes, no matter how far.
The eager spirit of the armies of Karak Undaz attracts many Slayers. Knowing that there’s always a worthy fight around the Undaz armies ensures they always hang around.
The position of the machines of the Engineer’s Guild is a major point of dispute among the army commanders. Some are strongly influenced by king Alrik of nearby Karak Hirn, pleading for a traditional army, using well-proven designs. The Engineer’s Guild nevertheless has a very strong presence in Karak Undaz. The Engineers came from Karak Hirn, when they lost their support there, and other Dwarf holds, to do business with the Empire.
Lord Varek understands the sentiments of his subjects, and gives each commander the freedom to assemble their forces as they see fit. When Lord Varek himself takes to the field, he has no problem with using anything that might help him vanquish his foes.

Recent History
Lord Varek recently organised a large-scale expedition to liberate the lost hold of Karak Grom in the Dragonback Mountains. This ancient hold held a special significance for Varek and his kin, as this was where their ancestors came from, thousands of years ago. The large dwarf army succesfully made their way south, through the Border Princes and the Badlands and started purging the tunnels of the keep from it’s vile new inhabitants. The full story of this conflict can be found elsewhere, but after months of intense tunnel fighting and many battles on the slopes of the mountains and foothills Karak Grom was once again a proper dwarf hold.
The original Royal Clan of Karak Grom is reputed to have been wiped out at the same time as their keep. This means there is no heir for the newly found crown of Karak Grom and so Varek Torakson has effectively become the ruler of two dwarf kingdoms, hundreds of miles apart. He has left Alrik Dargoson, his second in command, in charge of Karak Grom and has returned to Karak Undaz in victory. He has brought with him many treasures and relics rescued from the depths of Karak Grom. But perhaps more important than enormous wealth, he has brought with him the respect of the entire dwarf community. To reclaim a lost hold is the dream of every dwarf noble, and the exploits of the warriors of Karak Undaz are now being retold throughout the mountains.

The Leaders

Afbeelding
Lord Varek Torakson was raised from birth knowing he would inherit the crown of a young keep and he has always been determined to make sure his land’s reputation would not be tarnished in any way. He wants to make his keep large and powerful. He wants to make sure history will not forget Karak Undaz as some small footnote amongst the great Dwarf keeps, keeps with the millenia-old histories that Karak undaz envies so. This ambition has led him and his armies far beyond the boundaries of his realm to slay the forces of darkness. Through victory the whole world shall know of Karak Undaz.

Afbeelding
Durgrim Grunnison is the oldest of the nobles of Karak Undaz and is probably the only Dwarf to be able to claim he is older than the keep he lives in. Durgrim can recall, and has been part of, the entire history of the kingdom. His tales of the coronation of the first ever king of Karak Undaz by the High King in Karaz-a-Karak are in well rewarded in the alehouses he visits. It is whispered that he himself might have become the first king, back when it was decided to grant Karak Undaz its independence. Both he and Torak Okrison were leaders of large clans, but the decision was that the older Torak would be better suited to the task than the rash Durgrim. In his youth Durgrim travelled to the city of Mordheim and fought amongst it’s ruins. Though he was fairly succesful, he did so without the approval of the king of Karak Hirn, and that may have cost him the crown. If he feels any resentment over this, none have ever seen evidence of it, and he has served both Torak and his son as loyally as only a Dwarf noble can. His centuries old battle skill has earned him the honour of carrying the battle standard of Karak Undaz.

Afbeelding
Borek Torakson is the second son of Torak Okrison, the first king. With his older brother in perfect health and showing good signs of leadership, it was clear from a young age that he probably would not have to be called upon to rule the kingdom. He was apprenticed to a weaponsmith as part of his education and showed a lot of talent. He decided, with his father’s consent, to continue his development in this direction. He was apprenticed to one of the great Runesmiths of Karaz-a-Karak. Away from home and surrounded by great teachers he soon showed he had a fine feeling for the ways of the magical inscriptions. Some years ago he finished his masterpiece, a potent artefact to disrupt the flow of Magic. Now a master Runesmith, Borek has returned to Karak Undaz and now assists his brother in accomplishing his ambitions.

Afbeelding
Alrik Dargoson is Lord Varek’s cousin and has risen to the position of commander of the Royal Clan’s fighting units. In the campaign for the re-capture of Karak Grom it was Alrik who led the Royal army in the field, while Lord Varek directed the armies from the keep. After the victorious campaign Alrik was left behind as leader of the newly re-captured kingdom when Lord Varek returned home to Karak Undaz. As there is no apparent heir to the throne of Karak Grom, it may well be decided to let Lord Varek nominate the new ruler, in which case he will certainly name Alrik. This would be an enormous honour and a perfect ending of a fine military career

Lise Fredasdottir is the current leader of the third largest warrior-clan of Karak Undaz, after the Royal Clan and that of Durgrim Grunnison. It is not unusual for an unmarried female Dwarf to hold such a high position for a short time, but once she marries the position and responsibility would revert to her husband. As this makes her a highly regarded match for any Dwarf male seeking marriage, it is odd that after several years she is still single. Combined with the fact that Lord Varek is also still unmarried this has led to some persistent rumours, but nothing has ever been confirmed and Dwarfs are notoriously good at keeping a secret.
Lise's clan is mostly made up of stern traditionalists, inspired by nearby Karak Hirn. Therefore it is rare indeed to see them use any blackpowder weapons, and certainly no one would dare to suggest to use one of the new-fangled contraptions of the Engineer's Guild. So far this has had no adverse effect, and their battle-records are exemplary. Even though she is female, Lise has no compunction about leading from the front, and can often be found in the thick of the fighting.

Afbeelding
Burlok Goddison is the leader of one of the smaller warrior-clans of Karak Undaz, but has a reputation far exceeding the actual numbers under his command. Years ago Burlok decided to compensate his clan's lack of manpower by fully embracing the works of the Engineer's Guild. When his clan goes to war it is accompanied by all the latest warmachines, and the warriors are almost exclusively equipped and trained for long-ranged combat. Such extreme specialisation is frowned upon by most other dwarfs, but during the campaign for the recapture of Karak Grom Burlok's dwarfs had some spectacular victories, silencing the doubts of many. As can be expected, the relations between Burlok's clan and the Engineer's Guild are very tight. So tight, in fact, that to outsiders they almost appear to be one clan. Relations with the traditionalists' clan of Lise Fredasdottir, on the other hand, are understandably cooler, and it often requires all of Lord Varek's political powers to convince them to fight together.

Afbeelding
Dorin Skalfson is the head of Karak Undaz's Mining Clans. His place in Lord Varek's military high command is ensured by the fact that he therefore also commands many specialists useful in any military operation. Miners, both as tunnelers and as demolition experts, have their place in many a Dwarf military campaign, and of course the elite Ironbreakers are always useful.
It is unusual, but not unheard of, for Dorin to lead the fighting dwarfs of the Mining Clans as a separate army, as he has done in the fighting for Karak Grom. Such a force is obviously at it's best in the familiar dark confines of tunnels and caves, but one should never underestimate a Dwarf wielding a pickaxe, wherever he may be encountered.

Afbeelding
Belegar Thorison is a noble that has joined the ranks of Karak Undaz's rangers. Preferring to live above ground for most of his life, Belegar has become adept at the skills of his adopted kin. He now leads the Rangers as they scout the woods and hunt for game. Belegar has sometimes gathered about him a large scouting party, providing the armies of Karak Undaz with vital intelligence and waging a guerilla war against any threats. These kind of tactics are frowned upon by the more traditonal-minded Dwarfs, but they have proven their worth in recent wars.

Afbeelding
Hargrim the Mad is a veteran of the Great War against Chaos in the north. As with most Slayers, there is almost nothing known about his life before he became a Slayer, but his adventures in recent years have made him infamous. During the Storm of Chaos huge bands of Slayers marched with Garagrim Ironfist in an attempt to stop the enemy from pushing into the Empire. Most found the fate they were looking for, but Hargrim was amongst those who survived. Disappointed as he was with this lack of doom, Hargrim gathered about him other survivors and set out in search for other wars. He soon heard about the expedition Lord Varek had started to reclaim Karak Grom, and decided this would be a worthy cause to find his doom.
By the time Hargrim reached Karak Grom, far to the south, he had gathered about him a massive force of desperate Dwarves, and they proceeded to rampage through the countryside around Karak Grom, killing all before them in a frenzy.
Since then, Hargrim has kept on following the armies of Karak Undaz, as they present him with plenty of opportunities to find a worthy demise.

Zoals beloofd, 2 nieuwe Slayers
